Mattagami First Nation is home to the Ojibwe and Oji-Cree people who have long occupied the Mattagami River shores and Mattagami Lake areas as far as the Moose River head waters of the James Bay Coast.
Translated, the Ojibwe word for Mattagami means ‘Meeting of the Waters’. The community is home to approximately 200 members and citizens, with the total membership of the First Nation being around 700 people. We are located 80 kilometres south of Timmins Ontario, off of highway 144.
The people of Mattagami First Nation are the foundation of our community. From the wisdom of our Elders to the energy of our youth, each generation contributes to our strength and resilience. Our families, leaders, and knowledge keepers work together to nurture our culture, protect our language, and guide our Nation toward a stronger future.
Our Land
Our traditional territory is more than a place—it is the source of our identity, livelihood, and spiritual connection. The land provides for us, sustains us, and holds the history of our ancestors. We are committed to protecting and respecting our land for future generations, ensuring its resources are used responsibly and with care.
Our Culture
Culture is at the heart of who we are. Through our language, ceremonies, stories, and traditions, we honour the teachings of our ancestors and pass them on to future generations. Community events, youth gatherings, and cultural programs help keep our identity strong and ensure that the spirit of Mattagami lives on in everything we do.
